Life Lessons: You Always Have a Choice

How, often, does it happen that you look at the unfavorable circumstances in your life and wish the things could change?

There is nothing much you can do about the whole situation. You’re rendered helpless and you start getting a feeling that there is no choice left. As a result, you continue being sad.

Look at this:

Your girlfriend just turned her back on you and you want her back in your life. She wants to move on and you’re extremely disappointed. You don’t have a choice but to be sad. The maximum you can do is silently pray for the things to change or continually bug her with your messages and phone calls. Really?

It would be a lot better if you could just accept this has happened. She is not coming back. Her loss is going to make you sad for a couple of weeks/ months and then you’ll be fine. Rather than cursing yourself and finding out ways to bring her back, focus your time and energy on keeping yourself busy. Make a choice of staying strong through this time of hardship and pain.

A family member of yours just got diagnosed with a life-threatening disease and there is not much time left.

Will you waste the whole time sulking? Easier said than done but it’s time to create some memories together as there is not much time left. What you do from here on is going to determine the quality of that person’s life how much so ever is left.

Thus, we all have choices and we exercise them all the time- every day, minute and second of our lives. It’s never that you don’t have any other option. Certainly, there is no control over your past and there is no choice over what has already happened. But, there is a choice from here on.

Life is All About A Choice You Make

“We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand.”
― Randy Pausch, The Last Lecture

Say, that person with whom you wanted to be is no longer there. Try to be with someone who would want to be with you. Life will be much more beautiful and meaningful. It’s about how we react and the choices we make. Our choices determine our actions and future paths. It could be that your parents are giving you a hard time about what you should be doing in your career. Maybe you’re being discouraged from pursuing your passion.  You may continue suffering and react in a helpless manner but the option still remains to muster courage so as to create a life you want.

Right from the time when you wake up until the time you sleep, everything that you do is a choice that you make. It’s just that sometimes you don’t realize that a choice exists because of the constraints and daunting circumstances in your life.

Stop blaming others and your destiny. Rather, stand up and own your actions. Start accepting responsibility and you’ll soon become the architect of your dreams. Else, the powerlessness will always remain and nothing will change. It is no use shedding tears or feeling victimized by your situation. Power will come only if you want to and things will take a shape only when you want them to.

Still not convinced?

Try answering these questions and you might just understand the power of our choices:

  • Is there anything else you can do to change the outcome?
  • Will the changed outcome serve any useful purpose for you in the future?
  • What immediate steps can you take to come out of the present situation?
